    Top 6 Tips to Prevent Gum Disease

    It’s easy to neglect your teeth when you’re tired or in a rush, but this can lead to life-threatening dental conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis that cannot be reversed with a quick dental appointment.     Gum disease can develop when plaque is not removed regularly. Plaque forms because bacteria in your mouth break down food and drink. If you have diabetes or your immune system is weak for other reasons, gum disease can happen faster and with more serious consequences.

    Here are some tips to prevent gum disease.

    • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss the teeth at least once a day

    • Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet

    Sugar increases plaque, which leads to gum disease and tooth decay. For example, drinking a large glass of juice every day is bad for your teeth. Instead, drink low- or no-sugar juices and water. You should also avoid foods that cause tooth decay by avoiding foods with high levels of sugar.

    • Consume high-nutrition food

    High-nutrition foods can help your body fight off infections, reducing the chances of gum disease. A diet high in vitamins and minerals can be especially helpful in preventing gum disease.

    • Avoid smoking

    Smoking puts you at a higher risk of developing gum disease. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, so quitting smoking can save your teeth and your smile.

    • Visit your dentist regularly

    Schedule regular checkups with a family dentist to make sure you’re on the right track for a healthy mouth and teeth. Your dentist can also suggest ways you can prevent gum disease, as well as treat existing cases of gum disease.
